Lost in the Olympics black hole
Anybody else sucked into the Olympics? It started with the Opening Ceremonies which I have to give props to Danny Boyle who had to follow the AMAZING opening in Beijing, where director Zhang Yimou said he could have only gotten a tighter performance out of the thousands of volunteers if they were in North Korea. When I watched these Opening Ceremonies, I was thinking of that famous James Brown line, "I don't know karate but I do know crazy." I'm glad Boyle didn't try to mimic the tight synchronization of the Beijing opening at all and just brought history, politics (National Healthcare System--which is currently readying for major cuts), puppets (that giant baby--so weird!), dancing, humor, and music into one big crazy party bus.
The tv has just been on all weekend. I didn't even notice my internet was down for days (the girl reminded me of it yesterday morning when I tried getting online). And I've watched sports that I don't watch unless it's the Olympics. Anybody else get riveted by that table tennis match between the young 16 year old USA player and the leading world champion from China? The commentators said if the the USA player had won, it would have been the equivalent of the USA ice hockey team defeating the Russians in 1980. Well, I guess at least in the world of table tennis. It was a close match and unfortunately, the young girl lost.
All weekend long and each night I'm glued to the tv for fear of missing some amazing moment. Apparently I managed to miss the 16 year old Ye Shiwen's major world-record-breaking swim in the 400 IM where she bested Ryan Lochte's last 50m. Coupled with a big 5 second jump of her own personal best, she is suspected of doping--she was cleared by current testing, but as they say (since they keep samples for a number of years), time will tell. But I did manage to watch Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings maintain the unbeaten streak of winning sets through three Olympics despite the Czech team coming very close.
It's amazing the level at which these Olympic athletes compete at. I'm usually dumbfounded during a gymnastics routine or synchronized dive when I hear a commentator audibly wince or lament, "that's going to cost him/her." And it's usually because of a leg not being straight or toe not being pointed enough. And when Michael Phelps came in 4th in the 400 IM and said that the game plan didn't work, I'm surprised there's a strategy beyond, "haul a$$, son." But I guess these are finer details that put these Olympians far, far ahead of those of us who are pleased we make it to the gym at all.
But on that note, my favorite commercial running through the games is Nike's Find Your Greatness:
Definitely a refreshing message to us mere mortals--that we may not compete on the Olympic level but to inspire us to strive for our own, well, greatness, even if it's just a local Mud Run.

So I heard
- I heard that Giada De Laurentiis (the food network chef) had a rumored fling with John Mayer. My thoughts: first, what is the deal with John Mayer? Is he made out of marzipan? And brownies? Second, she is married to a designer for Anthropologie! I would most definitely prefer spending time gazing through an Anthropologie catalog and its store displays over hearing quotes from another lame interview with Mr. Mayer. And finally her grandfather, famed film producer Dino De Laurentiis died a few days after the story broke out. If I heard my granddaughter was messing with John Mayer, I'm pretty sure that'd make my heart stop too. BTW, both are responding with denials.
- I heard 127 Hours is an amazing movie. It's about Aron Ralston. You know, the trapped hiker who had to amputate his own arm with a dull knife to survive? I saw an interview Ralston did shortly afterwards and just listening to the description of what happened was excruciating. I'm not sure if I have the stones to watch the story unfold.
- I heard that Jessica Simpson got engaged. Maybe that's the real reason Dallas won. I'm sure she burned that jinxed pink Dallas jersey when she put on that ring. The happy guy is an ex-NFL player who decided to pass on going to Wharton to snuggle with Ms. Simpson and hold her purse. Which is probably heavy considering she is worth nearly $100 million from her clothing and shoe lines. Make that lucky guy--apparently she doesn't want to sign a prenup. Unfortunately, the timing of her announcement after her ex-husband's engagement seems, I don't know...premature? Or is the word immature?
- I heard that "The Situation" and Bristol Palin shot a PSA promoting abstinence, where Ms. Palin confirms she's not going to hook up before she's married "for real" (previous actions resulting in a cute baby notwithstanding, of course) and he overuses the words "the situation" to the point of confusion/annoyance. Oh yes, it did happen:

Curse you Snickers, I'm Boo Radley
I've had a headache and neck and back pains for a couple of days now and my brain feels like its stuck on pause. So I've had the the shades somewhat tilted down, struggling to be productive, which has thrown off the girl.
Mom, she says to me exasperatedly, you don't want to be like Boo Radley.
I said who?
You know, Boo Radley from "To Kill a Mockingbird", who always had the shades closed and everyone thought was a monster and he never went out in the fresh air...
Inside I was so thrilled that she was comparing me to a literary character (even if it is a monster) from a book that her Nana gave her, rather than say, a character on SpongeBob or iCarly. I let her open the blinds even though it pained my brain slightly. Worth it--I'll definitely sacrifice my intelligence for hers at this point.
I blame my headache on this totally creepy Snickers commercial:
Did anyone else think this was the opening frames of a new horror movie? Where did they even get that mask? Totally ghoulish. Did they hire the same lighting designer who lit the first Saw where those 2 dudes are chained in that gross bathroom? Man, the way the "lady" touches the mom's face and grabs her cart--how is this mom not crapping a brick?
Snickers, if you wanted me to associate bags of your candy with fear and monsters, mission accomplished. Congratulations, you've replaced that disturbing nun mask from "The Town" in my nightmares.
